Great job finding interesting articles, C&E! Because I was so inspired by your unique topics last week, I have decided to make the topic for this week's current event your choice. Happy blogging...I cannot wait to read your posts! :)

  1. Sunday, a forty six year old father of three admitted to court officials that he had indeed attacked a teen boy over the weekend. Why? The thirteen year old child had killed his Call of Duty: Black Ops character.
Located in Plymouth, England, something inside Mark Bradford had snapped as he watched his character die. Outraged, Bradford stormed over to the boy’s house and proceeded to grab his throat with both hands and choke him. The two had been playing over the Internet together and were using microphones to talk, letting Bradford know that he was the one who had killed him. According to Bradford, the boy had, “Called him a name.”
Thankfully, the youngster’s mother heard what was happening and was able to rescue the boy in time. Although he had a few scratches, he appeared to be unharmed. “It is pathetic,” the mother said, “that a grown man would attack a defenseless child like this. If you can’t handle losing to a child then you shouldn’t be playing games.”
Bradford’s attorney, Tracey Baker, claimed that her client had simply lost his mental state for a little, and he was let off on bail with a plan to appear in court on October 24th for a hearing. Mark claims that he was not hurting the child maliciously and that he had just grabbed him. Since then, he has seen the boy once and apologized profusely, saying that he regretted what he had done.

Personally, I think that the whole situation is silly. This is a forty six year old man we’re talking about here...with kids! What I would like to know is this: What the heck is going on in this man’s life that would give him the free time to do such a strange thing? With three kids, you would think he had some sort of job and would be busy working for his family! It’s not even all that great of a game (let’s hope this doesn’t start a rant). I’ve played it with my brother and the highlight of the game is having your friends with you so you can kick their butts and feel like a boss. Beating a thirteen year old? Not that much of a feat.
I feel like he should work on getting a new hobby.
    Perhaps knitting.
    Or playing Scrabble.

Sources: Saudi king revokes flogging of female driver

    http://www.cnn.com/2011/09/28/world/meast/saudi-arabia-flogging/index.html?hpt=wo_bn8

Recently in the country of Saudi Arabia a woman was sentenced to receive ten lashes for driving a car, but the King Abdullah soon revoked the sentence. The strict laws of the kingdom prevent any woman from getting behind the wheel, and when they do they are harshly punished.
This incident was met with outrage from Amnesty International who showed their displeasure and anger when they called for the dismantling of “the whole system of women’s subordination.”
Although government officials will most likely not produce a conclusive statement, a trusted source has said that there will be no sentence. The reason the woman was allowed to forgo punishment might have been that the government elite did not want to contradict what they had said, seeing as earlier in the year they had promised women more rights. Women will be permitted to join the group of advisers for the king, called the Shura Council. They will also be allowed to participate in the next municipal elections by being or nominating candidates. These are both monumental changes in political structure in the Islamic nation. A campaign called Women2Drive fights for equality and supports more women driving. They have been very vocal about this issue and use facebook and twitter to further their goals.

I was appalled to learn that such a terrible punishment could be given for something so trivial. The laws of Saudi Arabia are from a different age that simply don’t fit modern beliefs. The unfairness of this punishment is incredible. Women are denied many rights there and so face many more inconveniences and have to use more time and effort to accomplish simple tasks. Paying for a taxi to drive you everywhere is often very expensive, and many families, including some in the U.S, would not be able to afford that. Although a crime was committed and the perpetrator was fully aware of her actions so some form of disciplinary action must be meted out. I’m glad that the country is slowly changing to become more fair, but this is another reminder that the world is far from good and must be improved in many ways.

Title: Aaron Rodgers is the best quarterback in the NFL right now
    Author: Bailey Johnson
    Published: October 3rd

The title says it all, Aaron Rodgers is the best quarterback in the NFL and may be the best the NFL has seen in a while. On Sunday he threw for over 400 yards, 3 touchdowns, and he even brought 2 in the end zone by himself. This isn’t a one time fling either, he has be performing like every game this season leading the packers to a 4-0 start. He has already thrown for 1,325 yards this season and 12 touchdowns, and as I said its only week 4! The stats don’t lie either, Rodgers has a career passer rating of 100.5 the highest in NFL history. At the moment it looks as though nothing is standing between him and a back to back Super Bowl victory.

It is incredible what Aaron Rodgers has been doing this season and what he could do in the future. I don’t understand how a guy can sit on the bench behind Brett Favre for all those years and then suddenly pop up as the NFL’s best quarterback. This is especially good for me since I have him on my fantasy football team, as he dropped 45 points in week 4’s game, a record for this season. But back on topic I think if he keeps it up he is heading into NFL history as one of the greats and many, many Super Bowl rings.

Why Is Eating Healthy Good for your Body?
    By: Chris Sherwood
    May 19, 2011
    http://www.livestrong.com/article/25947-eating-good-body/

When you eat healthy, that consuming a balanced diet of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, healthy oils, low fat dairy and lean animal or plant-based proteins. These are outlined in the food pyramid. When eating a healthy diet, one of the first ways your body responds to that is weight control. Helps prevent obesity and gives you a higher amount of fiber. Having high amounts of fiber makes you feel fuller longer, and influences your metabolism. Eating healthy also helps your heart, so you don’t build up plaque in your blood vessels. By eating vegetables which contain pytochemicals, (substances that increase immune systems ability to fight diseases) you can prevent disease. Eating healthy also benefits your blood sugar levels. Most accomplished through eating amounts of carbohydrates. When you eat foods that are full of sugar, your blood glucose rises in your circulatory system. Too much glucose in your body can result in insulin resistance also known as diabetes. Insulin is an important hormone that unlocks the cell’s ability to absorb glucose from your bloodstream. Once they become resistant they don’t absorb glucose, which causes the glucose levels to rise above healthy levels and can cause serious damage to the blood vessels.

I think eating healthy helps a lot with keeping your body in shape. It helps prevent; heart disease, Alzheimer’s, diabetes and strokes. Eating healthy definitely helps when playing a sport. Your metabolism and fiber is high so you can do things longer. I eat healthy sometimes but now I wish that I would have started to eat healthy in the beginning. Also, I think when you choose to not eat healthy, you become lazy. When you like to be lazy you tend to stay home and not exercise. If this is your habit, there is nothing else to do while watching TV but to snack. NOT HEALTHY! Leads to more bad eating habits and before you know it you are eating unhealthy all the time. Overall eating healthy is a good thing to do because it helps your body function correctly and stay healthy.

Perry Slides in Two New Polls
    http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2011/10/04/perry-slides-in-two-new-polls/
Summary: Recently there has been a shift in Republican poll numbers. In the Washington Post/ABC News Poll, former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney continues to lead with 25%. Georgia businessman Herman Cain and former Texas Governor Rick Perry are both tied for second at 16%. Congressman Ron Paul from Texas is the only other candidate in double digits at 11%. Herman Cain has the highest growth, rising 12 percentage points since the last poll. Rick Perry has the largest loss, down 13 percentage points.
Response: I chose this article because I am interested in the GOP primary election (as you can most likely tell from my previous current events). I find the fact that Rick Perry is falling in the polls quite plausible. His recent debate performance has been poor. He has been attacked on changing his stances on multiple issues. What surprises me is the fact that Herman Cain has risen 12 percentage points in the last month. His debate performances have been impressive, and his economic growth plan makes sense. Those all would add up to poll success, but the fact that he has no political experience is what intrigues me. I do not see how people could think someone that’s only qualifications are being the CEO of a pizza chain could be qualified to run the nation. I still support the candidate in 4th place, Congressman Ron Paul, more than all the other candidates. He is honest and sticks to his views of limited government, which is what America was founded on and what we should still practice today.

Paleontologist would turn chickens into dinosaurs; book ponders evolution of time Aaron Leitko

Jack Horner is a paleontologist at the Museum of the Rockies. He says that the easiest way to bring back dinosaurs would through the reverse-evolution of a rooster. Evidence shows that modern day birds descended from dinosaurs. Sometimes, parts of extinct creatures can show up in today’s descendants. He thinks that by manipulating embryos, you can flip back to genes of long ago and turn a chicken into a velociraptor. It would be difficult because some of the genes in a dinosaur have left the chicken’s genome, but it is very possible.

I think that it is great that technology has increased so much that we could bring back species from millions of years ago. However, I would not want them to bring back a dinosaur. It is a great advance in genetics studies that could greatly help us in the future of biology and in medicine.

Rodgers shrugs off Farve comments, emphasizes team/October 5th, 2011

    http://www.boston.com/sports/football/articles/2011/10/05/rodgers_shrugs_off_favre_comments_emphasizes_team/
The retired NFL great, Brett Farve, made comments about Aaron Rodgers on a radio interview in Atlanta. Farve made comments about Rodgers winning a super bowl and said that he wasn’t shocked that Rodgers won a super bowl but that it took him so long. Farve said that Rodgers was a good quarterback, but he was put in a good spot with lots of talent around him. Farve stated that without a doubt, Rodgers has more talent around him then when Farve played for the Packers. Rodgers is aware of the comments but gave them little attention and left it at that.

It seems that Farve was trying to make himself look better than Rodgers and that may be true, but why say that? Farve had his time to shine and will be remembered as one of the best quarterbacks to ever play so I think it was just stupid for him to try and call Aaron Rodgers out. This article made me very angry because it’s obvious that Farve is just jealous that they guy who took his spot in Green Bay is doing a better job than he was in his last couple of years. I hope Rodgers keeps playing well and that Farve keeps getting jealous.

Occupy Wall Street is a protestor’s movement that is based in Manhattan’s Zuccotti Park, near Wall Street. These people have been protesting for 19 days about a variety of issues. Causes include criticism of the very wealthy, anger at America’s financial system, and poverty support and awareness. Wednesday, New York City workers unions endorsed the cause which led to more support. This protest is growing and could become very influential on some radical new changes.
I believe that this is a movement that deserves all of the publicity and all of their causes are respectable and fair. Right now America needs some changes in our social awareness and financial structure and this group is quickly gaining the power to do something. I want the movement to grow and continue and I hope that these campers can make it through the winter.

On Tuesday, the newly appointed Apple chief executive John Cook gave the announcement for the new highly anticipated iPhone 5, or what is thought to be the iPhone 5. John talked for hours until he introduced the iPhone 4S! The same chip as the iPad 2 powers this new UPGRADE of an iPhone. Even though it is just an upgrade, it still looks awesome with its glass on the front and black stainless steel band around. It is said to be an apparent change when playing games on the device. Also a great quality is that people who travel abroad with their new iPhone 4S, the units will work on GSM and CDMA networks.

I think this release of the iPhone 4S is kind of ridiculous. I feel really bad about the death of Steve Jobs though. Maybe they were dwelling on the fact that Steve was dying so much that they didn’t have enough time to complete the iPhone 5. It also sucks because my Dad was reeeally looking forward to it and now he just has to settle with an upgrade. Whatever it is still an iPhone and has some sweet new qualities.

Steve Jobs, the co-founder of Apple, died on Thursday, October 5, 2011, as a result of a long struggle with a rare form of pancreatic cancer. He was a great thinker, known for inventing products like the Macintosh, iPod, and iPhone, and for his outstanding leadership, ability to keep secrets, and make a product perfect. He brought Apple out of it’s dark times in 1997 with it’s “Think Different” campaign, and Apple now dominates the fields of digital music, tablets, portable music players, and smartphones, and Steve Jobs arguably brought the world into a digital age. He was also a part owner of Pixar Animation, and a huge Beatles fan. He was 56.

As a huge Apple fan, I admire and pay my respects to the face of Apple. He was an amazing person, and singlehandedly changed the world with his ideas. We wouldn’t have app stores, multi-touch smartphones, iTunes, or tablets today without him. Our world would be different, and he changed the future. I am saddened by the loss of a great man. Rest in peace, Steve.

During game four of the divisional playoffs between the Philadelphia Phillies and the St. Louis Cardinals, a squirrel ran across home plate. It was the fifth inning when a squirrel ran across home plate during a pitch by Phillies pitcher Roy Oswalt. The pitch was called a ball and Oswalt was angry that the pitch wasn’t made null by the umpire. Later in the game, Oswalt let up a two run homer and the Phillies ended up losing the game. Now the series continues to a winner-take- all game five. So the question arises, did the squirrel jinx the Phillies?
Jinxes and curses have been a part of baseball since it began. There are many curses and could this be one of them. If the Phillies lose game five of the divisional series with the Cardinals, the blame may transfer to the squirrel rather than the Phillies. The Phillies have had a great season thus far, with one hundred and two wins and a great team, but if they to lose now their great season is over. Is it a curse or just a superstition? We won’t know until the end of game five.

Amanda Knox was released for custody in Italy this week. She had been in prison for 4 years for the death of her roommate. Amanda and her boyfriend had been sentenced for the death without any evidence at all. It took a long time and a lot of work with the Italian government to get her case repealed. After a long day in court they announced all charges had been dropped and she was free to go.
I have heard about this case many times over the last few year, many people have. I was so glad to hear she had been released. I never understood why she was in jail. If I was her I don’t know if I could have made in 4 years in jail for something I know I never did and that no one could prove I did.

Sipping from the fire hose: making sense of a torrent of tweets/Author unknown
    The Economist/October 1st, 2011
    http://www.economist.com/node/21531025

    Summary:
This article reports a growing trend in both business and the information technology: the statistical analysis of social networking. Several recent start-ups decipher the contents of over 280million tweets a day, and report this information to companies. Companies can benefit from this data in two ways: 1) feedback of their product and 2) knowledge of consumer trends. Other companies may rate the influence of a microblogger, who companies may later approach to advertise a product. However, privacy concerns may seem to present a roadblock from this companies, as the social analysts use information such as location, age and gender to enhance their findings, which some may consider an invasion of privacy.

I believe that these social media analysts are extremely wise and have a very large potential to score enormous profits. As they begin to tighten the information they gather, companies will be able to tune their product according to real time feedback, and spend less on focus groups and market analysis. It was very wise that a group of people realized the amount of information available in social media when deciphered and presented appropriately.

Jobs’ is known as one of the greatest inventors of our time because he didn’t produce anything less then perfect. Jobs and Wozniak built Apple out of nothing in 1976; starting in Jobs’ garage building what is known as Apple 1 from money they received by selling his car. In 1986, Jobs was fired due to a power struggle within the company. 10 years later Jobs, was back on top of Apple, and initiated a vicious comeback starting with the invention of the ipod in 2001. Jobs invented the: iphone, App store, itunes, and ipad over the next decade.

Steve Jobs was an extremely important man because he began the portable era by producing the original ipod. Without Jobs inventions over the years who knows where we would be now in regards to portable technology. It’s a shame that someone that worked for everything he got lost his life due to cancer at a reasonably young age.

Apple has unveiled an improved version of the iPhone 4 but has disappointed many apple costumers by not unveiling the highly anticipated iPhone 5. The iPhone 5 will not come out until next year. Apple says that the improved version of the iPhone 4 will have around 200 new features. Apple Shares fell by 5% when they announced this news by rose quickly the next day, and overall their shares only went down by 6%. The improved iPhone 4 will have new voice control which will allow users to use their normal voices to talk to the iPhone. This is the first new device that Tim Cook has released since he became the new CEO of the company.
I don’t like the fact that they did not release a new iPhone. But the improved iPhone sounds like it has good new features and almost seems like a new iPhone. So since they had a year and a half to work on this I think that it will still be good. Although some people are mad I think that they will get over it once the get the iPhone 4S.

This law allows policemen and women to check the legal status of pretty much anyone and srrest them and hand them over to federal officers. Because this law was passed, a couple with two small children who came into the country illegally has decided to return to Mexico. The woman is going to leave first with the children and some clothes. After selling their home the man will also return to Mexico.
I find this to be rather sad. Both of these individuals came to the United States looping for an opportunity to earn an honest living. Through the 5 years that they lived in the US both of them have worked hard to be where they are at. However due to what I find to be an unfair law these people must now leave what they had worked so hard for. After the hard work of leaving their lives behind when they went to the US. The United States was created by immigrants who worked hard, and I don’t understand why they are trying to be so exclusive now.

When he arrived home the door was open and lights were on, everything seemed uncommon for that time. The police do not think of the parents as suspects for now.

How is that person able to kidnap a baby? It destroys a family and brings a lot of suffering to the mother, father and brothers of Lisa. I hope the police are able to find the person who is responsible of her disappearance and that she is brought home safe with her family.

He was one of the leading innovators of our time that oversaw the launches of products many of us wouldn’t be able to live without. Jobs had been suffering for years from pancreatic cancer and stepped down from the CEO of apple just over a month before he died. "Steve's brilliance, passion and energy were the source of countless innovations that enrich and improve all of our lives. The world is immeasurably better because of Steve." Apple said in a statement. Even though his salary at Apple was only $1 a year, he owned so much stock that his net worth was valued at $8.3 billion.
I feel that Steve has influenced so many people around the globe with all of his innovations. I know that I wouldn’t be able to survive without my Ipod! One thing that I wonder is how the company is going to do without Steve Jobs. Are there still going to be big innovations like the Ipad or other devices?

In 1991, Omaima Nelson was charged for the murder of her 56 year old husband, William Nelson. After killing him she amputated, and cooked some of his body parts. She was denied parole taking in her death sentence into consideration. So, now she must continue to be in jail for the remaining 25 year life sentence. While defending herself, she announced that she killed him due to being beaten on several occasions. She also stated that if she did not defend herself she would be dead.

I think that the courts made a very good decision by keeping her imprisoned. Although she says it was was self-defense no one had proof that this is why she murdered, amputated, and killed her husband. She could have killed him and left it at that, all the other stuff as well as killing him was unnecessary. She didn't have to take this man's life because he was abusive, she could have gotten out of the relationship. I think her reasoning for the murder of her husband is not acceptable...at all. It also upsets me to know that she'll still have a little life to live when she's released.

Bass fishing and country music go hand in hand

Bass fishing and country music have been beginning to go hand in hand recently. Bass fishing has been talked about in country music ever since country music was started, but now fisherman are getting more and more involved in the music. Professional angler Alton Jones has recently starred in a country music video by singer Rita Jones. The song is about an average working man who dreams of fishing while he is at work and Alton plays the fisherman. He had to take acting classes and take a break from fishing, but he says he really enjoyed the whole experience. Bassmaster elite series angler Casey Ashley also has just released his first ever country music album.
I think it is really great that many professional bass fisherman are getting more deeply involved in country. I am not a particularly big fan of country music, but the fisherman like it and had their opportunity to get involved with country music, so I support them. I also really enjoy bass fishing myself, but I can imagine that doing it for a job could get a little boring, so it is also good that the fisherman found something to do during their time off the water.

Mr.Dress, the witness, described that the helicopter did lift up but came back down. It spun around a couple of times and flipped over with the propeller underwater and the nose facing Queens. Luckily, Mr.Dress called 911 right away but one passenger died and the three other passengers and the pilot survived. As the helicopter went down underwater, the rescue team was able to rescued the pilot and there was a woman left in the helicopter on the front seat. Shortly after, she was rescued and was mired in mud.

This tragedy is very surprising. The source didn't really stated what caused the helicopter to crush back down, therefore i feel that this couldn't be "an accident." However, I'm glad that Mr.Dress and his nine months old son was there just to watch the helicopter lift off. Imagine if that poor baby was part of the helicopter ride! that would have been a real tragedy.

This tuesday Apple has revealed the newer, updated version of the Iphone 4, calling it the IPhone 4s. Apple's products never disappoint, and their newest creation includes a much faster processor, an 8 megapixel camera a new "personal assistant" feature. The rest of the phone's functions and abilities will remain the same as the first Iphone 4. The Iphone for the first time is available on the Sprint network, and also has international capabilities. The new model will be available in 16, 32 and 64 gigabyte sizes, starting at $200.00. New apps are expected to be developed for the Iphone 4s to utilize it's capabilities.

The new Iphone sounds very impressive, but really hasn't changed much. The appearance of the phone has not changed, and with all of the android phones with larger screens, the iphone 4 seems dwarfed. I think the technical improvements are innovative and useful, but not worth the $200.00+ upgrade. I'm still going to keep my eye out for the Iphone 5, and for the meantime will most likely not upgrade my current IPhone 4.

Apple fans reach for Jobs' devices to mourn him

By JORDAN ROBERTSON and RACHEL METZ

The Associated Press, October 6, 2011

On Thursday, hundreds of people across the United States gathered
at Apple Stores to mourn Steve Jobs. Admirers who use Apple Products
as everyday tools- used them as an “instrument of grief.” People held up
pictures of candles on their iPads, loaded old presentations of Jobs on their
Mac Books, and used their iPhones to tweet remembrances of him. They
grieved his loss through devices that without his vision would have been
    considered beyond reach.

Steve Jobs, the co-founder of Apple died on Wednesday after a
long battle with pancreatic cancer. I really enjoyed reading this article,
because I liked the idea of keeping Steve Jobs’ memory alive- by using the
technology he helped create. Without Steve Jobs vision we would be living in
an entire different world. Rest in peace, Steve Jobs.

Steve Jobs Death: The world Reaction
    ABC News/ October 7th, 2011
    http://abcnews.go.com/International/steve-jobss-death-world-reacts/story?id=14679556

Two days ago Steve Jobs of the big group of Apple passed away from his pancreatic cancer. He has been fighting his cancer for years now while he has been fighting he has been producing new apple products. He was well loved and a role model to lots, everyone has been touched by the things this man has done. Its an inconvineice that he had to pass the day after his newest product the Iphone 4s had its due date released. At least he got his ideas out before he passed.
I have owned a apple product since I was a little kid. Today The technology has advanced and it has all been because of Steve jobs. He will be missed very well and the apple products will most likely not have the same great touch as all the other apple products. This world will miss him, at his shrine there was all this of his inventions and flowers he has been involved in many peoples lives.
