4th: LAST POST due 5/11

Can you believe that this will be the last posting of the year? As you know, the NC primaries are being held this week; in addition to voting for national, state and local officials (yay, Federalism) there is also an amendment to be voted on by the people of North Carolina.

For this week's posting please check out the wording of the Amendment as written by our General Assembly:

In your response, please include the following information:
1. What does the bill mean (briefly summarize it in your own words)?
2. What is the difference between an Amendment (in this case, to the North Carolina Constitution) and a regular bill/law?
3. Find an article that is written about Amendment 1. This can be for or against the Amendment, an analysis of it or a reporting of NC voters. Using the format that we have used all year, cite, summarize and analyze the article.

This week's posting is more complex than usual, but covers a very relevant topic as part of our study of civics and the legislative process and as North Carolinians. It will be worth 20 points. Please take your time and do a good job with this very important issue.

Have a great week. :)

4th period: Current Events Assignment due 5/4

For this week's assignment, please find an article that is related to one of your investments in our stock market simulation game. The article should be as current as possible, but your can certainly go outside of the usual 2 week window for this posting. Hopefully, we will learn about some of the stocks that you are interested in and their potential promise in the current market.

Do not forget to post the article title/author/source in addition to the url...a few of you lost points for that last week. Stick to the format and inform me and your classmates.

Looking forward to the information! Have a fantastic week. Can you believe that it is already May? Only a few more current events to go!! :)

4th, 6th and 7th periods: Find 5 articles by 2/1!

For this week's current event assignment, please see step 5 of your community service project. You need not post your research and findings to the blog, but you SHOULD be keeping track of all of your steps in a word document or binder. I will collect ALL materials in March.

Make sure to research what is going on in this community surrounding your chosen topic. I cannot wait to see what you find. Please come and see me if you have any questions or run into trouble finding news sources for your topic.

I will check for parent/guardian signatures on the community service project at the beginning of class on Tuesday. Happy Researching and have a fantastic week. :)

4th period: Current Event due 1/27

Happy first current event for the 3rd Quarter!

This week, please find an article that is about the Chapel Hill/Carrboro area. It can cover any topic, so find something that interests you. If all 90 C&E students find out something about what it is going on locally, there should be a lot to discuss for our Community Service Projects. Remember that this week we should be narrowing in on a focus for the project. Hopefully this will start us off in the right direction. The article that you choose to focus on this week does not have to tie into your project topic (it can but does not have to); it might help one of your classmates find a topic of interest.

Happy Blogging! :)

4th period--Last current event of 2nd Quarter: due 1/13

Can you believe that this is your last current event assignment for the quarter? I can't! :)

For this week's post, please find a current event that is about anything that we have discussed during first semester. This is about as close to "your choice" as I can get while still making this somewhat relevant to the class.

Just to recap, the following is a list of topics that we have covered over the course of the year: government, democracy, citizenship, revolution, the American Revolution, compromise, the Constitutional Convention, the Bill of Rights, the Amendments, the Legislative Branch (Congress and the General Assembly) and the Executive Branch (the President and the Governor).

Hopefully this casts a wide enough net for you to find an article that interests you, hahaha. I look forward to reading what you uncover in your quest for the perfect Civics article. Have a great week and don't forget to STUDY for the 2nd Quarter Test on Tuesday and Wednesday.
