Second Interdiction of Western Caribbean Drug Sub

    URL: http://www.military.com/news/article/coast-guard-news/second-interdiction-of-western-caribbean-drug-sub.html

The crew of the Coast Guard Cutter Mohawk, a medium-endurance cutter homeported in Key West, Fla., interdicted a drug smuggling, self-propelled semi-submersible (SPSS) vessel, commonly referred to as a drug sub, in the western Caribbean Sea Sept. 17.Used regularly to transport illegal narcotics in the Eastern Pacific, this interdiction is only the second Coast Guard interdiction of an SPSS in the Caribbean. The Coast Guard’s first interdiction of a drug smuggling, SPSS vessel in the Western Caribbean Sea happened July 13.

This is the first time I have heard about drug submarines reaching US waters. I saw a program about drug submarines in the National Geographic Channel but they usually were found and destroyed by US drug enforcement agents stationed in Central and South America. Looks like the drug cartels managed to elude the agents or they just got lucky. But they still have to get pass the United States Coast Guard and if they can catch the subs twice they can always do it again. I'm pretty sure that cartels are feeling the lost of the merchandise and the submarine.

An ultra-light Cheetah S200 plane crashed into a Ferris wheel at a carnival in Canberra, Australia this
Saturday. Luckily, no one was injured but a 9-year-old boy and a 13-year-old girl were trapped on the
ride for nearly 90 minutes. The 32 and 52-year-old operators of the plane were also caught 30 feet
above ground. Only five passengers were riding the Ferris wheel at the time due to the imminent rain. It
was reported by paramedic, Brett Campbell that the children were very cooperative and brave as well as
the two men in the plane.

Everyone in this situation was very lucky because there were no injuries or deaths. It surprised me that
the Ferris wheel didn’t even collapse after being crashed into by a plane. I’m still wondering what the
reason was for crashing the plane though.

On Tuesday, Islamist militants set off a car bomb in Somalia. They placed it in front of the Ministry of Education there. It killed more than 70 people, and wounded many. It was led by al-Shabab, who is part of an al-Qaida group. It was his deadliest attack yet. The explosion caused everywhere within a half-mile of the city to be covered in dust and smoke. Officials are not sure if he was really going for the Ministry of Education. Al-Shabab has been known for other attacks, one taking place at a graduation ceremony, and it killed 24 people.

Obviously, someone needs to stop Al-Shabab. He has been taking away innocent lives, just like any al-Qaida group. I hope they are able to stop him before he does something more devastating, like what happened on 9-11.

Title: Amanda Knox Leaves Italy, Heads for U.S.

    URL: http://www.usatoday.com/news/world/story/2011-10-04/amanda-knox-return-to-us/
    50651434/1

Amanda Knox, age 24, has finally been released from an Italian jail after four troubling
years. Four years ago, Knox’s British roommate Meredith Kercher, had been found brutally
murdered. The blame had immediately been put on Amanda Knox and her boyfriend. Monday,
and Italian appeals court decided that the DNA evidence they had could not be compatible with
hers and they released her. Meredith Kercher’s family was stunned to learn Knox was free and
they insist that she partook in the murder. As Knox left the prison, inmates cheered for her and
shouted “Amanda, ciao!” and “Freedom!” Knox was then reunited with her family, whom
hadn’t seen her for two or more years, and she was immediately flown home.

I think the news is great that she’s coming home. Many other people could disagree.
People are even comparing her to Casey Anthony which all together is a completely different
problem. The evidence they had was against a man who was already in prison, not Amanda
Knox. Sure, no one can be completely positive whether or not she had something to do with
the murder, but what they have found provides that Amanda Knox isn’t guilty. I’m sorry for
Meredith Kercher and her family, but I can’t help but wonder why it took Italian courts so long
to notice the DNA evidence didn’t match up. I’m also curious as to what will happen now to the
    new suspect.

    URL: http://www.cnn.com/2011/10/05/us/california-shooting/index.html
Summary: At 4:15 local time, Shareff Allman walked into the office of the quarry that he worked at, with an assault rifle, and a handgun. Allman shot and killed three and wounded several others. He then ran five miles to a road, where he shot a woman while attempting to steal her car. California police have started a man hunt for Allman and report him as armed and dangerous. Allman is known for being an anti-violence activist, who preaches on a local television channel. Authorities aren’t sure if he is just a disgruntled employee if his reasons were deeper than that.
Response: After hours of searching for an amazing article; I couldn’t find one that wasn’t extremely boring, so I settled with this one. Allman sounds like a psycho. I can’t imagine how he got an assault rifle in California of all places (my lawnmower is even outlawed there) but that’s beside the point. I hope they catch this guy soon; he seems to have some major anger management issues.

Apple unveils iPhone 4S, but no "5" this time

    October 4, 2011
    CBS News
    http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2011/10/04/scitech/main20115473.shtml

On Tuesday the Apple company introduced the long awaited iPhone 4S. Instead of the iPhone 5 which was reportedly next apple decided to upgrade the iPhone 4 then call it the iPhone 4S. The new iPhone is powered by the same A5 chip that Apple uses in the iPad 2. Now the iPhone will come with an 8 mega pixel camera along with a battery to last up to 8-9 hours depending on the programs used. So far the iPhone sales have increased by 125% during the second calendar quarter. As the announcement of the release was leaked Apples iPhone stocks increased ready for the boom of the product.

My opinion to the new change would seem to be beneficial to the product and the company. But like when the last iPhone first came out their were so many little glitches it seemed to be worse then the one before. If Apple lives up to what it says its going to do the iPhone 4S should benefit everyone.

    Report: Microsoft mulling Yahoo bid
    By Patrick Rizzo
    msnbc.com
    http://bottomline.msnbc.msn.com/_news/2011/10/05/8171411-report-microsoft-mulling-yahoo-bid

On Wednesday, Microsoft's shares increased after rumors that they were in the works of a bid for Yahoo. A source close to Microsoft says that they will seek a partner in this deal, but a company has not been named. Both companies refused to comment on the situation, saying they don't like to give into the market rumors. As a result to many changes in the management of the company in the last four years Yahoo has fallen behind much stronger competitors such as Google. Nothing is set in stone, Yahoo is said to be exploring their options.

This story is important because our economy is not in the best shape right now and even strong companies are not doing as well as people thought. This relates to the government because they are trying to fix this recession we are in. I thought this was interesting because I was unaware that Yahoo was even having financial trouble.

Cloning method may help make personal stem cells
    WRAL October 5th, 2011
    http://www.wral.com/news/science/story/10225632/

Scientists recently developed a cloning technique that may potentially allow them to create customized stem cells for patients. These stem cells were created by combining DNA from a skin cell and a donor egg cell. When the process was performed with the normal procedures, removing the egg cell DNA and replacing it with the skin cell DNA, the cell did not produce embryos. When the skin cell DNA was added to the egg cell, which still contained its DNA, the cells survived and produced stem cell embryos. However the cell now had too much genetic information and thus it would not be able to be recognized by a human body. These stem cells have 69 chromosome instead of 23. Deiter Egli, the senior research fellow at the New York Stem Cell Foundation, says the results, although flawed, are promising and he hopes to overcome this “barrier.” Some of the public believe this method of creating stem cells from cloned human embryos is not moral however other methods of stem cell production are also flawed.
In my opinion this is a great achievement by these United States scientists and regardless of their current obstacles they have accomplished an important step in the medical and scientific worlds. This whole process of taking stem cells and creating embryos from human cells is seen as morally wrong by some. In time I believe it will be possible to convince the majority otherwise, since Egli himself said that the possibility of creating a human is not desired and not likely in the near future. However if scientists should further inquire about the possibility to create a human clone, the public will most likely become more opposed and research will be halted. I hope that this research is continued, since I think it may have a significant impact on the medical treatments in the united States and in the World. Stemk cell research is promising and I believe it will be an expedient in human medical care if we can decide as a country to not over step moral boundaries.

Last week there was a French film (Les Hommes Libres), that was focused on Jewish people's savior in a Paris mosque. The film is about the Nazi's occupation in France during the 1940's. The muslim community was prtrayed as rescuing the Jews during this difficult time. Unfortunately for the Muslim/Jewish relationship, there hasn't been much documentation on their helpful relationship.in one case of North African Jew, Albert Assouline escaped from a German prison camp, then he claimed that there were 1,700 resistance fighters which included Jews, Muslims, and Christians.

With these new discoveries there has been new ideas about, how Muslims have helped Jews during the Holocaust. This is really interesting news because, reports have said that Muslims were working with the Germans at that time. I think this will be a great story to tell for many of the people affected by the Holocaust, and this possesses good relations for the Muslim and Jewish community.

Wife who killed and cooked husband denied parole/ Katerina Nikolas
    www.digitaljournal.com/ October 6, 2011
    http://www.digitaljournal.com/article/312432

In 1991, a woman was charged for the murder of her 56 year old husband. Not only did she murder him, but she slaughtered and cooked some of his body parts afterwards. During her recent trip to the courthouse, she was denied parole regarding her life sentence. Therefore, she must continue to be kept in prison for her remaining 25 year life sentence in jail. When she tried to defend herself, she stated that she acted out of self defense because she has been continuously abused by her husband. She thought that if she did not defend herself, then she would have been dead.
After reading that the court will have her continue her sentence without parole makes me extremely satisfied, although I wish that because of her actions, she deserves something worse than years without parole. It may be possible that she could have acted out of self defense but self defense should not go to the extent of murder and cooking the body. In comparison to this news story, news of wives killing their husbands seems common, but since she dismembered his body and fried, boiled and churned the different parts such as his hands and head, she went on a whole different murder on the style of murder. Restating my opinion, I am satisfied with the court’s decision, but I dislike how she will be in her sixties when she is released from prison.

The death of Steve Jobs, the creator of the popular, Apple computer and electronic company, has been the talk of USA. He lived for 56 years and his death wasn't a surprise, he had been battling pancreatic cancer for years. Steve Jobs had been interested in technology for several years. He worked with his friend, Steve Wozniak to build their first commercial Apple computer in 1976. In 2001, he announced the first original iPod, transforming portable music. In the late 2000's his Apple products grew in popularity, selling 275 million iPods, 100 million iPhones and 25 million iPads worldwide.

Personally, I'm a big fan of apple products, I'd chose a Mac computer over a PC any day. So it's really upsetting that Steve Jobs, the founder of this popular company, died. He changed technology in computers and portable music and modernized America. I was shocked at how many Apple products have been sold, it really is a popular company. It's sad that his battle to fight pancreas cancer got in the way of his work though and eventually took his life.

In New York citizens of the United States are out on Wall Street protesting the unstable economy. In Manhattan people are camping, banging drums and some are even dressed up as “corporate zombies.” On September 24th one hundred people got arrested. This last Saturday 700 protestors got arrested for blocking the Brooklyn Bridge. These protests started September 17th with a few dozen protestors but now the number has increased to a couple hundred. The protestors even have medical treatment and legal help available. They also have been printing their own newspaper called the Occupied Wall Street Journal. These protests are now starting to occur around the country. The protests are important because the economy is not doing well in the United States and it is important that the government understands our concerns and wants.
It is good that people are showing what they want the government to do. This may help encourage the government to make decisions to better the economy. Right now they are just arguing about what bills to pass and nothing is being done. They need to make a decision to help the US citizens. In class we are discussing the factors that led up to the declaration of independence. In this article and in class we are discussing the people of the United Stated disagreeing with the government. Why did they dress up as corporate zombies? What do corporate zombies symbolize?

Steve Jobs vs. Bob Dylan, Jobs wins almost every time. Steve Jobs the co-founder of Apple Inc. helps design the quickest smoothest and perfectly balanced group of computers. Does anyone know what it is like not to have bouncing logos or songs at the click of a button. They way that apple has been finding new ways to show the same programs on different shaped devices that nobody in their right mind would not accept. This is the way Steve Jobs an Apple Inc. have been working for years without a single flaw. Finally, back to Bob Dylan, whose music has changed the world but what apple has done has changed innovation forever and computers will never be the same again.

I think that this article is very moving and it shows all the things that Steve and Apple have done for everyone in changing the computer world. I also think, Apple’s ability to change products so that nobody can turn them down is a great effect and it should be cherished. Last, I think that apple has changed the way we live for the better and Steve Jobs would defiantly beat Bob Dylan in a showdown.

South Africa call to solve gay 'serial killings'/ no stated author
    BBC News/ October 6, 2011
    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-africa-15204429

In Johannesburg, South Africa, five gay men have been murdered in their homes within the past 18 months. The Commission on Gender Equality has shared its concerns about the police's slow investigation of these crimes, although according to police spokesman Col Lungelo Dlamini, there has been no delay in the investigation. South Africa is one of only ten countries in the world that has legalized homosexual marriage, and the only African country to do so; unfortunately, hate directed towards homosexuals is still very prevalent due to religious and cultural beliefs. The recent murders have been suspected to be the work of a gang or serial killer. South Africa's gay and lesbian community has been “gripped by fear”, and hopes that the police will be able to identify the killers.

One thing that surprised me about this article is the fact that South Africa has legalized same-sex marriage; I was not aware of that previously, and I think that it's wonderfully progressive, especially with their cultural background that does not not support homosexuality. However, these recent murders are horrifying. I believe that the police should make the capture of the people responsible a priority; it has already been 18 months since the first killing, and they are no closer to finding the person or people responsible than they originally were. The murders appear to be linked, and it is likely that they will continue unless something tangible is accomplished. The prevention of hate crimes should be a main focus of the police force.

He was a very important person in the world because of his great inventions and strong business approach.
I think that his death will be mourned by many people because a lot of people have some kind of Apple product such as an ipod or a mac. He was one of the most influential people in America because of how great his inventions were. I also think that his death will be bad for the Apple industries because after they ousted him, their company went downhill and had to rehire him. He was a one of a kind man who changed the way we live today. I think that nearly everyone who has heard of Apple will mourn for the loss of him.

When Earth was first formed it was a dry place with no water but now most of the planet is covered by
water. Scientists used to believe that water came from comets during the Late Heavy Bombardment,
until they discovered the Hydrogen isotope ratio on observed comets didn’t match up with that of the
water on Earth. But just recently, a few scientists in Germany observed a comet called Hartley 2. Its
Hydrogen isotope ratio matches up almost directed with the water on Earth. Scientists are now almost
back to the old theory that the Earth’s water came from comets.

This article caught my eye because I have always wondered where all the water on earth came from. I
find it very interesting that allllll of that water could have come from comets hitting the earth. Where
did the comets get their water? I might have actually learned more from this short article than I did at

Obama lays down gauntlet to Senate on American Jobs Act

    Author: BBC

    Source: BBC

    Date: 2/6/11

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-15203542

Obama has recently claimed that his new job act will improve current American economy. Republicans do not approve this proposed tax raise because wealthier people will pay for it. On Thursday Obama said that he would “support a new approach by Senate Democrats to pay for the act with a tax on millionaires, rather than his plan to raise taxes on couples making more than $250,000. This new act could lead to 2% increase in economic growth and create 1.9 million jobs. The plan would also rebuild highways, bridges, and schools. This has lead to a debate between the president and the Republican Party.

I think that the act should be approved by the republicans. I don’t think it’s fair for them to oppose something that could help our country’s economic stance as of right now. The article said that unemployment is still at 9.1%. This controversy isn’t helping our country and the Republican Party should start to see this as an eye opener and consider Obama’s job act.

Can Neutrinos Move Faster than Light?
    Adrian Cho
    http://www.wired.com/wiredscience/2011/09/neutrinos-faster-than-light/
This article talks about the interesting findings of the OPERA research group. Nothing should be able to move faster than light. However, some neutrinos, sub atomic particles that are similar to an electron but with no charge; are traveling 730 kilometers 60 nanoseconds faster than they should. Many scientists are skeptical about such results saying that “I'd bet my house [that the results where false].” Even the head OPERA scientist says he does not completely believe the results quite yet. Other scientists are very excited and wish for this experiment to be duplicated.
This article is super important because it could mean that Einstein's theory of spacial relativity is wrong. It would also mean that light is not the fastest thing in the world, and much of our modern science is based on this. If Einstein's theory of spacial relativity was wrong then many things previously thought impossible might be possible. We might be able to “look into the past”, and interstellar travel might be easier than we thought before. So much of modern science is based on Einstein's theory of spacial relativity that we would go through a period of just re-doing what we had already done for a couple of years. The relationships of mass, gravity and energy may be wrong. The equation e=mc^2 could also be wrong although it would likely become e=mn^2 where n is the speed of a neutrino. But, this would mark a major break-through in modern technology and would demand an overhaul of our current scientific system.

This year's noble peace prize was awarded to three women, who will share the award. Ellen Johnson Sirleaf was the first female president of Liberia. All said they were surprised and humbled to win the award and said they would continue to work for change.

I think it is great that these three women are sharing the award. All three work hard to get better situations in their country and definitely deserve it. I also think it is significant that all three are women because the majority of the Peace Prize awards have been given to men. It is nice to see women who are doing good for their country get recognized.

10300 jobs were added across the US during the month of September. Economic experts were warning of another dip before this. The private sector added the most jobs, and the public sector added the least. Obama is still encouraging congress to pass his jobs bill. The economy is still unsteady and Europe is in bad shape so this was better than expected. Economists still say that there is too little incentive to create jobs. There was only a 55000 expected job increase this month.
This article shows that jobs are being created. This is a good sign in this economic recession. I agree that more jobs need to be added and if incentives are needed than they should be offered. I have not read Obama's job bill but doing something is better than nothing at all so I believe it should be passed. If changes need to be made than they should be made quickly so that the bill can be passed.

Some people would argue that he was the most technologically influential character of all time. Steve Jobs was an inventor and innovater, and the figure head of Apple. The most important question being asked today is without Steve Jobs, will Apple flop?

I’ve grown up watching Apple take over the technological world. It is quite a shame that the man at the head of that movement died at such a young age. Steve Jobs may have died, but his effect on the world will live forever.

It is about the perspective of a man named Dan Tolleson who has a PhD in politics and has been jobless since 2009. He thinks that the money that will be spent of unemplyoment should go to tax returns which will assist in stimulationg the ecnonomy out of a second recession. Many economists are forecasting a second dip in the economy and if new jobs aren't created quickly, another drpo is imminent. The unemployment rate currently rests at 9.1%.

I think it is very interesting to see such a viewpoint from this man because he is unemployed, so this extension would actually benefit him, but he is thinking for the economy as a whle instead of just for himself. He seems to be a very credible and legitimate person to listen to for advice on the economy due to his extensive education and direct experience to being jobless. I personally think he might have a shot being on eof the president's advisors. Anyway I realy hope that the whole jobs problem is sorted out by the tie I graduate from college because college is a huge investment, and if I can't get a job, it will be a waste.

Missing Baby Lisa's Parents Make Emotional Plea for Her Return
By CHRISTINA NG and KEVIN DOLAK

Lisa Irwin was last seen around 10:30 on October 3rd, 2011, when her mother put her to bed. Lisa is a 10 month old baby that lives in Missouri. Baby Lisa’s mother held a stuffed animal of barney as she pleaded for the returning of her baby. The infant disappeared from her crib in the couples home in Kansas City, Mo., after being put to bed by her mother. The parents, who are engaged to be married, did not stay in their home last night, according to ABC's Kansas City affiliate KMBC. They returned to their house around noon today to pick up some baggage, but they are staying at an undisclosed location. They were interrogated by police late into Tuesday night, but police said they are not suspects. At the news conference, Police Capt. Steve Young said police have received 47 tips and over 300 law enforcement officials have been involved. However, the massive police and FBI search has come up empty so far. There are no suspects and no leads, police said. Police cancelled the Amber Alert Tuesday night on what they call a technicality. Authorities say Amber Alerts are most useful in the hours following a disappearance when a suspect may be attempting to flee with or harm a child. It is a way of immediately alerting the public to increase vigilance. Once 12 hours have passed, Amber Alerts are often called off as searches continue. Kansas City police said that cancelling the Amber Alert does not change the nature of the search. Lisa was last seen at 10:30 p.m. on Monday asleep in her crib at her parents' home. When her father arrived home at 4 a.m. from an overnight shift as an electrician, he discovered that Lisa was missing. The parents immediately called police. While police initially fixated on a window and screen in the bedroom that appeared to have been tampered with and may have been where a kidnapper entered and exited, they are not certain that this was the case.

This is a very sad situation. I couldn’t even explain how I would feel if I had a child and they got taken from me. All I can say Is I hope that they find her in one piece and bring her home safe! Anyone that can take a baby, not even a year old is very twisted and crazy!

Three women's rights activists share Nobel Peach Prize

3 different women were presented with the most recent Noble Peace Prize. Liberian
President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf (age 72,) activist Leymah Gbowee and rights activits Tawakkul
Karman Of Yemen. They say that this honor is to be shared with all 3 women's countries
and people. Karman is the first Arab women to be presented with the Noble Peace Prize and is
also one of the youngest to recieve the honor. They say that the world has no way to achieve
over all peace without equal rights of women in all states, countries, and continenats.
I completely agree with the actioins taking place by these women in their countires.
Although American's don't seem to fully understand their culture, it doesn't mean we
shouldn't support them in recieving rights and liberites that we have had for many years.
In fact, we should focus more on their lack of rights and what is wrong in their culture/society
to cause the outcomes that they act on, which seem to be the only thing we care about.

    CBS News/ October 6, 2011

When Amanda Knox arrived in Seattle after four years in Italian Prison she didn't sleep mush because she couldn't believe she was free. On Thursday her feather spoke and said she was running on adrenalin because of her happiness and being with her family. The 24-year-old former university Washington student left Italy after the case was over because they claim she was help with the killing and rapping of her roommate Meredith Kerchr. Amanda was excited when they released her from prison and numerous of reports were standing outside waiting for her to address then. Her family was thinking about counseling but they decided to take it by day to day and let her get back to her old life before the accident and if things aren't turning out the way they should they result to counseling.
I am really happy for Amanda because she is a free women who went to prison for nothing. I can relate to her because my cousin went to prison for 5 years for a robbery he didn't commit. If I was her I would be overwhelmed but a little nervous with the camera, photographers and seeing me on the news.

Title: Some Unemployed Find Fault on Extension of Jobless Benefits.

    http://www.nytimes.com/2011/10/07/business/some-unemployed-find-fault-in-extension-of-jobless-benefits.html?partner=rss&emc=rss

This article is about a very interesting viewpoint on Obama's jobs bill and the extension of the benefits of the unemployed. It is about the perspective of a man named Dan Tolleson who has a PhD in politics and has been jobless since 2009. He thinks that the money that will be spent of unemployment should go to tax returns which will assist in stimulating the economy out of a second recession. Many economists are forecasting a second dip in the economy and if new jobs aren't created quickly, another drop is imminent. The unemployment rate currently rests at 9.1%.

I think it is very interesting to see such a viewpoint from this man because he is unemployed, so this extension would actually benefit him, but he is thinking for the economy as a whole instead of just for himself. He seems to be a very credible and legitimate person to listen to for advice on the economy due to his extensive education and direct experience to being jobless. I personally think he might have a shot being one of the president's advisors. Anyway I really hope that the whole jobs problem is sorted out by the time I graduate from college because college is a huge investment, and if I can't get a job, it will be a waste. The future of a lot of people, not only adults rests on what we can do right now to fix our economy and create jobs so we can all make our own money instead of living off of unemployment checks.

Title:Why pancreatic cancer is so deadly
    Source: Cnn.com
    Date: 10/6/11
    http://www.cnn.com/2011/10/06/health/conditions/pancreatic-cancer-steve-jobs/index.html?hpt=he_c2

People all over the world have been talking about the recent loss of Steve Jobs. What hasn't been as talked about is the deadly disease that people struggle with everyday. Pancreatic cancer is the fourth highest cause of death from cancer in the US. The pancreas regulates insulin and helps to digest food. Steve Jobs had a rarer form of the disease called a neuroendocrine tumor. The more common form that has taken the lives famous people like Patrick Swayze and Joan Crawford and many others, is adenocarcinoma. Its a shame that it has taken deaths from such well known people to stir up some interest in the disease that kills so many people in our country. It is less studied than other cancers and that needs to be resolved. It is nearly impossible to detect in enough time to cure the cancer. The only treatment is to remove the tumor surgically if it's caught in time. Nearly always the cancer is completely undetectable until it has metastasized, at which point it is inoperable meaning there is no treatment. Because of this vicious cycle of detection and treatment, Pancreatic cancer boasts a startlingly high mortality rate of 95%. Something must be done to further the advances in the study field so that we can better fight this and many other dangerous cancers.

I thought this was a really well written article. Everyone has been talking about Steve Jobs because he was such an icon to the world of technology. It is very helpful in creating awareness surrounding cancer, specifically Pancreatic cancer. Cancer has been an problem for people globally for thousands of years and still we find ourselves despairing at the thought of it because there's just not enough knowledge to fight it in many cases. Nearly everyone has had or know someone to have cancer and it is one of the scariest and most heartbreaking things that can happen in our lives today. Most people aren't surgeons, doctors or researchers so that's not a way we can help in this battle but by creating awareness, we create funds and from those we get more research and studies. I, like most, am sad that Steve Jobs has died but hopefully from his death, more people will become aware of such a scary disease that, with help, could possibly be preventable, treatable and maybe one day curable.

Title: Squeezed out in India, Students Turn to U.S.
    Author: Nida Najar

    URL: http://www.nytimes.com/2011/10/14/world/asia/squeezed-out-in-india-students-turn-to-united-states.html?_r=1&partner=rss&emc=rss

This article is about the large number of students from India who did not make it into India’s Universities because of very strict and high cut offs. It speaks about how they couldn’t even get into a college in India, but easily got into Ivy League schools in the U.S., even with large amounts of scholarship to get them to attend these schools. It is extremely competitive to get into higher education in India, many schools requiring a 95% or higher percentage on the final high school cumulative exam, and many of the students falling just short of that are streaming into America to easily get into prestige colleges here. American colleges have begun to take advantage of this, and actually go out to India to recruit students, or even opening offices in India to attract students.

I think part of the problem of trying to get into a university in India is that there are so many people that the requirements to get in are going to become more and more strict as time goes on, because you can only hold so many people in a school, and you want to have the best possible students. Because of the current economic downturn, fewer people are able to afford and go to college, and universities were not doing as well on money as the could be, so I see it as a smart move to go to a place where it is very difficult to get higher education is harder, and filling up all of your empty spots with people who just barely didn’t make it. It is hard to imagine such a competitive educational system, especially here in America where our graduation rates are declining. It would definitely be much harder on the students. Maybe a solution to the problem in India would be to construct more quality learning institutions to relieve the huge amount of people trying to get into college there.
